(The MIAF)
MOTHERHOOD IN AFRICAN CULTURE
In societies across the world, the physical and social transformation of becoming a woman and later a mother is an extremely important part of the life of a female. Through the MIAF oral history project our main aim would be to capture memories of womanhood to motherhood of 20 African women in Liverpool and how this has changed since they have moved to UK, particularly in Liverpool. The rituals surrounding womanhood and motherhood reflect different cultural norms and practices. We therefore need to leave a legacy to our future generation by capturing and recording the culture African women – from Congo and Nigeria- have brought to the UK in relation to the rituals surrounding womanhood and motherhood, what they have left behind and what have since changed since they have moved to Liverpool.
